Programs for Adults

This country is a nation of life-long learners.  To fulfill this need in Lebanon, the Historical Society offers a range of different types of programs thoroughout each year.

Historical talks

There is always something new to learn about the past and the Historical Society often invites experts to come to Lebanon and share their knowledge with members and anyone who is interested.  Recent lecturers have spoken about 18th century merchants in Connecticut, researching immigrant ancestors, and architecture around the Lebanon Green.  In 2010 there will be talks about restoration of the Huntington family tomb in Norwich, Civilian Conservation Corps camps in Connecticut, and the history of baseball before 1860.

Fireside chats

These informal Sunday afternoon programs are often associated with a “Community Exhibit” in the Society’s Multi-Purpose Room.  Recent topics have included: Bender Family Trips to the Grand Canyon, St. Francis Church, and Defining Farming Traditions in Lebanon.  Fireside chats scheduled for 2010 include Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church and Boy Scouting in Lebanon.  Join us to learn a bit about local history, participate in lively discussion and enjoy homemade refreshments.

Hands-on workshops

Grown-ups like to get their hands on projects just as much as children do, so the Historical Society offers opportunities for adults to become actively engaged.  The program might feature a craft activity or address an issue like caring for valued antiques or family heirlooms.

Round-table discussions

In the tradition of the New England town meeting, the Historical Society turns to its constituents to help plan for the future.  Over the last few years, community volunteers have met to plan how to improve street visibility and curb appeal, develop children’s programs, plan programs and exhibits.  Community input has been invaluable and LHS will continue to seek support from its neighbors.

Community events

As part of the Historical Society’s community outreach effort, LHS offers several events each year that are intended to build local support and interest.  These have included: the Annual Antique Show, antiques appraisal days, and concerts.

Volunteering

If you have some time and would like to be more involved with the Historical Society, LHS has many opportunities to offer.  If you have special skills to offer, wonderful, but the Society will provide training as needed.  Volunteers are needed to work with children’s programs, assist with exhibit planning and installation, conduct genealogical and historical research and help with numerous short-term projects.
